After a difficult year for the Cyrus family, the famous patriarch has made it clear that one thing matters for his brood - happiness.
In the new issue of Parade magazine the 49-year-old takes about patching up his relationship with his family, including his daughter Miley Cyrus, 18.
The former country music star echoed the interviews sentiment last night by taking his brood out for a family meal at Mexican restaurant Casa Vega in Studio City, California where the group looked relaxed and content as they walked back to their car.
'We've always had a slogan in our family: 'If you ain't happy, it ain't working,' Billy Ray Cyrus told Parade.
'You need to love what you're doing.'
'As long as she's happy and loving making music – and I know she loves acting – that's all that matters,' he says of his daughter, who this year alone has dealt with the separation and reunion of her parents as well as her own drugs scandal .
'It's important to stay focused on where you want to go, what you're all about and what you want to do with your work,' he continued.
The father of six also had some advice for young people eyeing a career in the spotlight.
'Keep it real. Be who you are and do what you do because you love it,' he said claiming that was the advice her received from country stars Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins.
'Nothing else in this business is worth it. Don't be chasing fads or trying to necessarily be the guy that's trying to fit in with everybody else.'
