Campaigners fighting to scrap Britain’s first-past-the-post voting system were last night accused of ‘nasty personal attacks’ after branding ex-Minister Margaret Beckett a political dinosaur.
Mrs Beckett, 68, who is fiercely opposed to ditching the current method, was outraged to learn that AV supporters had superimposed her head on to the body of a dinosaur and posted the picture on the Yes To Alternative Vote Facebook page.
She said: ‘Last Tuesday, I attended an impartial debate where the Yes campaign refused to turn up and engage with me on AV. They prefer to stay away from the debate and make these sorts of nasty personal attacks.’
The official pro-AV campaign – Yes! To Fairer Votes – said it had nothing to do with the page, and accused No campaigners of far worse stunts.
A spokesman said: ‘Tasteless as some of the images may be, they are nowhere as tasteless as the No campaign suggesting that babies will suffer if we have AV, our Armed Forces will not be properly equipped, or that fascists will prosper under AV
